Beginning Sewing



This hands-on course introduces students to fundamental sewing skills, both hand and machine sewing.  Students will learn basic techniques, terminology and complete several practical projects while developing their creative abilities in a supportive environment


  Beginning Sewing Course
**Course Duration:** 8 weeks
**Class Length:** 2 hours per session
**Materials Fee:** $50 (covers basic supplies)
  Required Materials
- Sewing machine (available in classroom or bring your own)
- Basic sewing kit (included in materials fee):
- Fabric scissors
- Straight pins and pin cushion
- Measuring tape
- Seam ripper
- Hand-sewing needles
- Selection of thread colors
- Fabric marking tools
  Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Operate a sewing machine safely and effectively
2. Understand basic fabric types and their properties
3. Read and follow simple sewing patterns
4. Execute fundamental hand and machine stitches
5. Complete basic garment alterations
6. Create simple projects from start to finish

  Week 1: Introduction to Sewing
- Sewing machine parts and operation
- Safety guidelines
- Basic supplies and tools
- Practice straight stitching
- Project: Simple tote bag
  Week 2: Hand Sewing Essentials
- Basic hand stitches
- Button attachment
- Simple repairs
- Project: Needle book and pin cushion
  Week 3: Working with Patterns
- Reading pattern instructions
- Taking measurements
- Pattern layout and cutting
- Project: Elastic-waist skirt or shorts (part 1)
  Week 4: Construction Techniques
- Seam types and finishes
- Pressing techniques
- Project: Elastic-waist skirt or shorts (part 2)
  Week 5: Zippers and Closures
- Installing basic zippers
- Working with buttons and buttonholes
- Project: Zippered pouch
  Week 6: Home Decor Sewing
- Working with home decor fabrics
- Measuring for home projects
- Project: Throw pillow cover with zipper
  Week 7: Basic Alterations
- Hemming techniques
- Taking in/letting out seams
- Mending and repairs
- Project: Altering a basic garment
  Week 8: Final Project
- Individual project selection and completion
- Review of techniques
- Troubleshooting common issues
- Project showcase
  Grading and Attendance
- This is a pass/fail course
- Minimum 75% attendance required
- Completion of at least 6 projects required to pass
  Class Policies
1. **Safety First:** Always follow machine safety guidelines
2. **Clean Up:** Students are responsible for cleaning their work area
3. **Machine Use:** Share machines respectfully when using classroom equipment
4. **Materials:** Bring your supplies to every class
5. **Make-up Work:** Missed projects can be completed at home
